In William Wordsworth’s 1798 poem “The Tables Turned” he romanticized that much can be learned with a simple walk in the woods, claiming all should just “let Nature be your teacher”. Well, we agree and we have found the perfect classroom situated in the tropics nestled neatly between 8°and 11° latitude just north of the equator.

While the level of concrete (i.e., urban development) that covers the Earth’s surface is still estimated at being lower than 10%, over the past few years something unique has occurred. For the first time in history a greater proportion of our planet’s inhabitants live in cities than in the countryside. This shift will obviously bring forth both direct and indirect impacts on natural habitats and the species that live there. Our research interests center around the dynamic changes expected as the urban frontier expands further into nature, such as one of the great ecologists predicted over 40 years ago.
